The Driving Test
Congratulations on completing all 12 EDT driving lessons! Now, you're ready to apply for your full driving test. To ensure success, it's crucial to assess your readiness for the test. The 12 EDT lessons provide the foundational training, but to become a safe and competent driver, you need additional practice. Spend more hours behind the wheel and consistently apply what you've learned in each lesson.

Sit a pre-driving test
The preparation period before your driving test is crucial. Even experienced drivers can enter the test with a false sense of security, believing they drive "as well as anyone else." This overconfidence can lead to failure due to minor oversights or uncorrected bad habits. That's why a pre-test with Mannion Driver Training is highly recommended.
The pre-test simulates real driving test conditions, allowing for identifying and correcting small but significant details in your driving technique. You will be fully prepared for all test elements, ensuring no surprises on test day. Completing the Pre-test Driving Course will greatly boost your confidence, which can substantially impact your final score.
The Driving Test
Ensure you arrive at the test centre well before your scheduled test time. If you are late, the test will not be conducted, and you will forfeit the fee.
The driver tester will verify that your provisional license:
-
Belongs to you
-
Is current
-
Covers the correct vehicle category
You will also need to read and sign a statement confirming that:
-
Your vehicle is adequately insured
-
Your vehicle is in roadworthy condition (additional details on vehicle roadworthiness will be provided in your appointment letter)
What can you expect from the driving test?
The driving test is straightforward and typically lasts about 40 minutes for cars. It includes:
-
Questions on the Rules of the Road, including identifying road signs and demonstrating hand signals
-
Reversing around a left-corner bend
-
Performing a turnabout in the road
-
Completing a hill start
-
Driving approximately five miles under various road and traffic conditions
Your driving will be assessed in the following situations:
-
Moving off
-
Driving in traffic
-
Stopping
-
Reversing around a corner
-
Turning to face the opposite direction
-
Starting on a hill
-
Parking
-
Turning right and left
Key aspects of your driving assessment will include:
• Road positioning
• Overtaking and passing
• Anticipation and observation
• Use of mirrors and signals
• Progress and speed
• Compliance with traffic lights, road signs, and markings
• Use of vehicle controls (accelerator, clutch, gears, brakes, and steering)
• Use of secondary controls such as wipers and demisters
Recent enhancements to the test require you to know how to operate secondary controls, including:
• Windscreen wipers and washers
• Demisters
• Rear window heater
• Lights
• Air-conditioning (if fitted)
You must also know how to adjust the seat, seatbelt, and mirrors, and ensure the doors are closed.
