Getting Started
At Mannion Driver Training in Tuam, we are dedicated to providing focused, safe, and effective driving instruction. Our goal is to thoroughly prepare you for your Practical Driving Examination. Before assistance can begin, there are a few initial steps you can take independently.
To start your driving journey, you must first obtain your provisional driving licence, also known as your learner’s permit.
Step 1: Apply for and Take the Driver Theory Test
The first step in your driving journey is to apply for the compulsory Driver Theory Test. Visit the official Irish Driver Theory Test Service website at theorytest.ie for detailed information on the test and how to apply. This site provides a comprehensive overview of the test process and allows you to book your test online.
Once your test date is confirmed, you should thoroughly study the Rules of the Road and the Driver Theory Book. To best prepare, I highly recommend utilising the resources available on theorytest.ie, including study manuals and apps that offer everything you need to know and allow you to take mock tests.
Step 2: Eyesight Test or Medical Report
Congratulations on passing your Driver Theory Test! Now, you're ready for the next step.
First, review the driver's license application requirements on the National Driving Licence Service (NDLS) website at ndls.ie. This site provides comprehensive information about obtaining a Provisional Driving Licence.
You will need an eyesight test to qualify for a learner's permit. Any optician can perform this test and should have the necessary form. If not, you can download the form from the NDLS website. Some licenses may also require a medical report, details of which are also available on the NDLS website.
Once your optician and/or doctor have completed the necessary forms, you'll be ready to proceed to the next stage.
Step 3: Obtaining Your Learner Permit
Congratulations on completing the first two steps! Now, you're ready to apply for your learner's permit.
Book an appointment at your local NDLS centre. You can find information on the nearest centre on the NDLS website at ndls.ie.
To apply for the provisional licence, bring the following documents to your appointment:
-
Theory Test pass certificate
-
Eyesight or medical report
-
Photographic ID
-
Proof of PPSN
-
Proof of address
Your learner's permit will be sent to you by post. Once you receive your Provisional Driving Licence, you can move on to the next step.
